The Writing Life: How to Survive and Succeed Without Breaking Your Heart or Losing Your Mind

When: Saturday, September 9 – 8:45 a.m. to 9:45 a.m.

What: Here’s the secret about writing: survival (and also success) has nothing to do with talent or technique, it’s all about mindset and attitude. This is true whether you are just starting out or have been writing for decades. The most effective way to up your game is to understand yourself more fully, both as a writer and as a human being.

In this talk, Gabriela debunks three major myths about writing, lets you in on her secret formula for conquering goals, and walks you through a fundamental technique that will change your writing process forever. You’ll leave this session energized and inspired, but also with the tools you need so you can write more, write better, write smarter.

 

Finding Your Tribe or How a Writing Group Saved My Life

When: Saturday, September 9 – 11:15 a.m. to 12:15 p.m.

Where: Heritage E

What: Need to jump start your writing? Join a writing group or start your own. Fuel your writing with the collective creative energy and community of a group of writers. Learn how to use timed writing prompts as part of your creative process. Achieve your writing goals (start a new project, finish an old one or successfully publish) by tapping into the support and expertise of other group members.

If you can’t find a group, create one. We’ll look at crucial details such as whether to charge for meetings and how much, where to meet, how to attract other writers and how to deal with difficult personalities. Learn how to be an upstanding literary citizen. The more you give, the more you get back.

Lessons From Failure: How to Learn, Recover, and Succeed When Everything Seems Overwhelming

What: Writers, both established and emerging, have faced all kinds of obstacles. Whether it’s constant rejection, a new baby, unemployment, the death of a loved one, or just the daily grind, writers always seem to face some insurmountable struggle, which often takes them away from their work. However, many are able to prevail with a bit of persistence and perseverance. Join us for a conversation about trying and trying again, about failure and success.

Participants are encouraged to share their experiences and discuss how we can become better writers by turning our failures into successes.
