Unlike novelists and short story writers, nonfiction writers aren’t assumed to have much of a choice about their narrator when writing essays or memoir. The presumptive narrator is the first person, either a representation of the writer or the “objective” third person.

Vivian Gornick’s book, The Situation and the Story, addresses this question of the narrator in nonfiction, but the book stops short of offering practical suggestions for writers on how to create a persona on a page. In this presentation, Geeta will share examples from fiction and nonfiction and talk about keywords and phrases writers can “steal” to help them create their narrators.
